Denture Soft Liners

Denture soft liners are used to correct and improve the fit of a denture to the changing jawbone and gum tissue of the denture wearer. A layer of soft pliable material, a medical grade soft polymer, is applied to the tissue-fitting surface of the hard denture. This applied layer acts as a shock absorber, especially during chewing, between the gum and the denture’s hard surface. A denture soft liner is a very good solution for patients with chronic gum pain or soreness caused by an ill-fitting denture due to receding gums and flattened gum tissue, even after adjustments to the denture have been made. Soft liners are used in both new dentures and existing lower dentures that need to be relined. This simple procedure can be done in one appointment at the dentist office, and most patients respond very well to the soft liner materials.

Denture soft liners have been around for over 20 years and they are constantly improving. Here are some of their main advantages:

  • They provide increased comfort and better feel to the denture fit
  • They act as a shock absorber during chewing, and there is less or no “pop-off”
  • They can last up to 2 years before replacing
  • Some soft liners are made from advanced materials that resist fungal growth
  • Some advanced soft liners are made to use less adhesives

However, denture soft liners don’t work with all denture types. In some cases, they may be difficult to clean thoroughly due to the porous material they’re made of, which allows bacteria to penetrate and stay inside. Soft liners may harden with time and cause some discomfort.
