Partial Dentures

A Removable partial denture is a custom made and naturally looking appliance designed to replace patient’s one or more missing teeth. It helps restore speaking and eating, and fills gaps in the smile. Partial dentures could prevent the face from sagging by providing support for the cheeks and lips where the natural teeth are missing.

Partial Denture Types

A typical partial denture consists of metal framework to which the denture teeth and pink acrylic gum is attached. Metal partial dentures are stronger than the plastic ones, lighter to wear, and more hygienic. Both types may have precision attachments or clasps that keep them secure in the mouth. The clasps may be slightly visible, when you open your mouth, depending on where they’re placed.

A new partial denture may take some getting used to and may feel foreign and bulky in the mouth. Your dentist may even ask you to wear it full time in the beginning. This is done in order to determine if it needs to be adjusted even further, if you’re experiencing soreness. A partial denture is usually removed and cleaned before going to bed until the next morning. With time you will get used to it, and you’ll be able to eat and speak comfortably. Reading out loud is very helpful to improve and restore the speech patterns. While eating, it is recommended to chew on both sides to keep the pressure even. Sticky and hard foods should be avoided.

A partial denture is an excellent solution for replacing missing teeth for both lower and upper jaws. As having a partial denture is still more comfortable than wearing a full denture, your dentist will do his best to help you save your remaining natural teeth to be able to support a partial denture that will be designed to perfectly fit and replace your missing teeth. In some cases, he may even recommend getting 1 to 2 implants for an implant-assisted partial denture.

Patients should take extra care when cleaning the partial dentures and the teeth that fit under the clasps. With time, the fit of a partial denture may change and require additional adjustments at the dental office. Some adjustments are completed on the same day but others may require more time. If you notice any changes with your removable partial dentures, including cracks and chips, it is best to call your dentist immediately. At CV Dental Care, we will custom design your partial dentures for perfect comfort, functionality, and beautiful smile.

Immediate Dentures

An immediate denture is one that is fabricated prior to the natural teeth extraction and inserted into the mouth immediately following the extraction procedure. An immediate denture may be complete (full) or partial.

While having an immediate denture placed in the mouth right after the surgery may seem odd, it helps with the healing process a great deal:

– it helps control the post-surgical swelling and should be worn without removing for 3 days
– it prevents harmful bacteria from entering the wounds and causing an infection
– it allows the patient to feel confident while interacting with others
– it helps the patient re-establish the speech pattern ahead of time before the permanent dentures are placed
– it helps preserve, maintain, and support the soft tissue and contours of the face during the healing process
– immediate dentures can look very good and improve patient’s look and smile
– it helps process (chew) the soft food, aiding the digestive system

While your dentist and the dental lab will strive to make a perfect fit for your immediate denture(s), some minor adjustments may be required, because of the unpredictability of the post-surgical bone reshaping and soft tissue shrinkage. Since the original impressions for an immediate denture are taken before the removal of the teeth, a soft temporary reline material may be used to refit your denture, if needed, during the healing process. It takes up to six months for the tissue to heal completely and finalize the permanent dentures.

Wearing an immediate denture may seem like a challenge and requires patience. The tong getting used to the “bulky” teeth, the feeling of not having adequate room inside the mouth, practicing certain sounds, irritable gums, difficulty chewing, and not being able to eat your favorite foods—this is to be expected during the healing process.

Our friendly staff at CV Dental care will answer all your questions and find the best possible solutions to make your smile perfect.

Dentures

A denture is a partial or complete set of artificial (false) teeth and gum tissue fabricated and shaped to one’s mouth to replace missing teeth and surrounding tissue.

Edentulism (loss of teeth) is present throughout human evolution, and early dentures made of animal and human teeth were being constructed as far back as 700 BC in Northern Italy.

Getting dentures made to replace missing teeth, however, dramatically increases with the industrialization of England in the late 1800s, when British per capita sugar consumption increases 500%. False teeth were made from ivory, porcelain and even dead men human teeth.

In the 20th century, new technologies and materials in dentistry allowed for a much better quality and lower priced dentures.

Most dentures today are made of acrylic resin, porcelain, or combination of both. Traditionally, porcelain was preferred because of its durability, translucent and natural appearance. Porcelain is better used for full dentures, as it can wear down the natural teeth on contact over a period of time. Another disadvantage of porcelain dentures is that they can break easily if dropped on a hard surface. Today’s acrylic dentures are safe, naturally looking, high quality, and comfortable to wear. They could be as strong as porcelain dentures and are made from the best advanced materials possible. They’re a better choice for people with less gum tissue as they provide more support.

Over a period of time, the gum tissue in the mouth and the bony ridges, which used to hold the teeth, change due to the lack of teeth. When dentures are placed on these ridges, they compress on the underlying tissue, resulting in loss of bone and gum volume. This process is known as resorption or atrophy (wasting of the bone), which is an ongoing process. Therefore, it is recommended to replace your dentures every 3-6 years. When your dentures don’t fit comfortably in your mouth, it is important to call your dentist and having them relined.

The two main types of dentures are full and partial. In addition, there are: immediate dentures, custom dentures, snap in dentures, implant supported dentures, over dentures and economy (generic) dentures.

Our dentists at CV Dental Care will evaluate your oral health and discuss your options in getting the best possible solution to restore your smile.
