Teeth Whitening

Teeth whitening may seem like a modern-day procedure, but scientific discoveries show that it may actually have begun 4,000 years ago in ancient Egypt. The first known whitening paste was made from ground pumice stone mixed in wine vinegar. Throughout the ages, having white teeth has always been a sign of beauty and status.

Today, teeth whitening is one of the most popular, if not the #1 cosmetic dental procedure. It’s easier than ever to get white and shiny teeth and enjoy improved appearance and self-confidence. It works on people of any age and it is proven safe under the supervision of a dentist.

Even people born with naturally white teeth will get stains and discoloration over time. This is due to the staining effect of certain beverages, like red wine, coffee, tea, and cola. Certain staining foods and spices, tobacco use, taking prescription drugs, and the natural ageing process also can cause yellowing and graying.
Are you considering a teeth whitening procedure? At CV Dental Care our advanced bleaching techniques offer speed, convenience, and outstanding results in achieving a bright and perfect smile. Whether you want to lighten up only your upper teeth or both upper and lower, we will work with you and help you achieve your goal.

Get the Whitest Smile with EZ White Pro™ In as Little as 30 Minutes

If you want to whiten your teeth in as little as 30 minutes or less, our in-office EZ White Pro™ Whitening System offers immediate results. It is fast, gentle and effective, and patients can achieve smiles up to 8 shades whiter. It can be scheduled even during the same visit.

How does EZ White Pro™ work?

EZ White Pro™ patented technology uses a whitening gel with FDA approved ingredients hydrogen peroxide and carbamide peroxide to whiten the teeth naturally. It is applied only to the surface of the teeth after which it is activated with a dental curing light. As the gel begins to deep clean stains below the surface of the teeth, it changes color from orange to white to indicate to your dental professional that it has been activated. The innovative light-activated bleaching process has been proven safe through extensive research and there is very little or no sensitivity to the teeth.

What Kind of Results Can I Expect?

Results of up to 8 shades whiter have been reported by many patients, and your dentist will help you set your realistic expectations during the consultation.

Depending upon a variety of factors, such as tooth structure, personal habits and oral hygiene, results will vary from patient to patient.

How Long Will Results Last?

Because EZ White™ Pro works deeper beneath just the surface stains on the enamel of the tooth, results will last much longer than results with a non-professional treatment. However, proper dental hygiene and limiting staining agents such as red wine and coffee can help maintain your results.

At CV Dental Care, professional tooth whitening is a thorough, safe, and effective procedure that has long lasting results, unlike the store bought-whitening treatments. Our top-rated dental care providers will customize your treatment and help you achieve your dream smile.

Call us today or simply let us know at any appointment if you would like to whiten your teeth.

TMJ Disorders

According to statistics from the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, over 10 million people nationwide are affected by TMD (temporomandibular disorders) wrongly called TMJ, with women being more affected than men. The symptoms can vary from mild discomfort to severe pain and involve not only the jaw joint but also the surrounding tissues, muscles and ligaments. As there are different causes for experiencing pain in the jaws, your dentist will help make a correct diagnosis and get to the source of the issue.

Symptoms of TMJ Disorders

One of the most common symptoms of the TMJ related disorders is a clicking sound when opening or closing the mouth, usually accompanied by pain. This sound can sometimes be loud and is caused by shifting of the disc inside the joint. The disk is small and fibrous and acts as a cushion and shock absorber between the ball and the socket. The temporomandibular joint connects the mandible (or the lower jaw) to the temporal bone, which is at the side of the head. The flexibility of these 2 joints allows the jaw to move up and down and side to side, which plays an important role in chewing and speaking. The joint can be easily located by placing fingers just in front of the ears and then opening the mouth. Although the temporomandibular joint is a “ball and socket” joint, because of its complex movement and unique anatomy it is one of the most complicated joints in the body. TMJ disorders are a group of conditions of the jaw joint and chewing muscles with pain being the most common symptom.

Other symptoms may be present:

-locking of the jaw or very limited movement
-muscle pain in the cheeks, temples, or in front of the ear, especially while eating, speaking and yawning
-earaches
-muscle stiffness in the jaw
-jaw becomes or feels stuck
-radiating pain in the jaw, face and the neck
-change in how the teeth fit together
-sharp pain from the joint

Causes of TMD

The exact causes of TMD are not clearly defined, and people may experience symptoms without obvious reasons. Clicking or popping sounds in the jaw without pain being present are common in most people and usually they are not an indicator for TMD. Contrary to the popular belief that bad bite or orthodontic braces can trigger TMDs, research shows that this is not the case. Some of the causes of TMD may include:

-dislocated or eroded disk
-injury related trauma to the jaw
– trauma to the jaw as a result of bruxism (clenching or grinding of teeth)
-rheumatoid arthritis or osteoarthritis of the jaw joint, which can damage the cartilage
– teeth that are not lined up right, or misaligned bite
-stress

When to See Your Dentist

If you are experiencing chronic or long term TMD symptoms, call your dental specialist at CV Dental Care for a professional evaluation. Often people may have other health conditions such as chronic fatigue syndrome or fibromyalgia that may be affecting the temporomandibular joint. Your dentist will look at your detailed dental and medical history, examine the way your jaw moves, your teeth and bite for signs of grinding or clenching, and may take x-rays or a panoramic x-ray to get a clear picture of the temporomandibular joint.

In most cases, your dentist may recommend a conservative treatment that may include:

-physical therapy
-temporary soft food diet
-stress reduction and relaxation therapies, massage
-pain relievers
-anti-inflammatory drugs
-muscle relaxant drugs
-steroid injections into the TMJs and tendons
-reshaping teeth to make them fit right
-hot or cold compresses on the jaw

Irreversible treatments for changing and correcting the bite may include orthodontics, crown and bridge work, implants to replace missing teeth and using an occlusal guard to stop teeth from clenching and grinding.

In serious cases with structural problems in the TMJ, your doctor may have to intervene surgically to correct or replace the joint.

TMJ disorders can have a debilitating effect on daily activities. If you’re experiencing any of the TMD symptoms accompanied by pain, give us a call. At CV Dental Care, our TMD specialists will work closely with you to prescribe the best possible treatment that best fits your lifestyle and beliefs.

Denture Relines

Not having your natural teeth, as well as the process of aging causes gum and bone atrophy in the mouth. Most of this resorption occurs during the first 3-4 months after the teeth are extracted, and then continues at a slower speed. A poorly fitting denture can worsen this process and cause gum pain and difficulty chewing. Periodic checkups at your dentist and proper denture care will help prolong the life of your dentures and keep you pain free.

When your denture starts causing you discomfort such as pain, difficulty speaking or chewing, or gets loose, a dental reline may be recommended. This is a simple process of changing the shape of your denture so it can fit properly in your mouth.

Hard Reline

Every two years, all full dentures should have a hard reline. In this process, a layer of the existing denture surface is removed. A putty-like material is filled in and inserted into your mouth to make an exact impression of the denture area. Once this impression has hardened, it is used to create a new surface or base for the existing denture teeth. This step is sometimes completed in the dental office, but more often is done in a lab to produce a longer-lasting surface.

Soft Denture Reline

This procedure is recommended for patients with tender gums or sore spots who are not able to wear the regular hard-surface dentures. A soft reline is a simple and quick procedure that can be done in the office. A liquid polymer is layered into the denture to add depth and cushion and it needs to be replaced every one to two years.

Temporary Reline

A Temporary Reline is performed when the patient’s gums are swollen or sore to a degree that a hard reline or soft reline are not possible. A medicated reline material is applied to the denture, allowing the inflammation to subside and heal. This reline adjusts the denture to fit tightly as it is soft and pliable. After a few weeks, when the gums are healed, the patient is ready for a hard reline or new denture.

Braces for Kids and Adults

An orthodontist prevents and treats mouth, teeth, and jaw problems. Using braces, retainers, and other devices, an orthodontist helps straighten a person’s teeth and correct the way the jaws line up.

Orthodontists treat kids for many problems, including having crowded or overlapping teeth or having problems with jaw growth and tooth development. These tooth and jaw problems may be caused by tooth decay, losing baby teeth too soon, accidents, or habits like thumb sucking. These problems can also be genetic or inherited.

So why would you go to the orthodontist?

Your dentist or one of your parents might recommend it because they see a problem with your teeth or jaws. Or a kid who doesn’t like the way his or her teeth look might ask to see an orthodontist.
